Dried Distillers Grains with Solubles

DDGS (Dried Distillers Grains with Solubles)
(Positivliste Code-Nr. 5.05.03)

DDGS qualities can vary according to the grain types and production processes. DDGS is a byproduct which results during the processing of grain to alcohol. During the fermentation process starch is converted to alcohol and carbon dioxide. Important nutrients such as proteins, minerals, fats and vitamins are retained in the distillers wash. After drying and pelletizing a very easily digested and storable protein – rich feed stuff for cattle, pics and poultry is the result. Due to the high portion of UDP DDGS can be substituted proportionately for soya and rape meal in the feed for dairy cows.

According to the raw material and the production process the ingredients of DDGS vary greatly. Thus wheat DDGS has a higher raw protein content but at the same time a lower raw fat content than maize DDGS. The colouring is influenced by the choice of raw material as well as the production process and can vary from golden brown to dark brown.

In the following these ingredients are – due to their usage – mainly seen as quality determing:

The qualities of DDGS can vary within the following benchmarks:

Dry matter ca. 90%
Raw protein 24 to 30%
Raw fat 5 to 10%
Crude fibre 5 to 10%

DDGS is typically traded as follows:

Wheat-DDGS: around 90 % dry matter, around 30 % raw protein, around 5 % raw fat, sound quality, usual in trade, otherwise tel quel
Maize-DDGS: around 90 % dry matter, around 24 % raw protein, around 10 % raw fat, sound quality, usual in trade, otherwise tel quel
